I saw Bon Iver in Boston on Friday night. It was one of the most amazing shows I have been to. I guess I expected Justin Vernon to be stage shy because his first album was such an internal and personal journey but he was completely charismatic, getting fully into the music, physically and emotionally. He became quite primal when playing the guitar, just letting the music control him. He opened the show with Perth, which was perfect. The lighting for the entire show was amazing, his choice of color was impeccable. Perth, particularly, was great because they had about 30 light amber tinted spots going the entire time with no color backwash. It matched perfectly with his full band (including wind chimes). The encore was the perfect ending to the show. The first song he played for the encore was Skinny Love. He sat center with a pedal steel guitar and the rest of the band stood behind him and sang the chorus. The last song he played was The Wolves and he had the audience sing along really loudly and every person’s voice got mixed together flawlessly with the music.
